A couple’s passion project has hit the market, and it’s quite the find for anyone looking to live in a movable house with a fun origin story.
Currently listed for $75,000, a former school bus and current tiny home was converted over the course of a couple years by Joe and Holly Whiting, who purchased the 25-foot-long vehicle for $14,000 in 2018, Insider reported.
“We had a long-term dream to retire, build a bus, and just leave, which we did,” Holly told The Post of the nomadic vision that inspired her and Joe to spend more than two years and some $65,000 changing the car into a crib. “There were times we felt like abandoning the whole thing. We had to learn all the needed skills. In the end, we are very proud of what we made.”
The bus — which is named Sandy — features 600 watts of solar power, a 600 AH battery, 75 gallons of water, custom cabinetry, hand-milled lumber and a four-seater dining room table that pulls out from under the queen bed, according to the listing. There’s a copper and tile bathroom with a shower and a composting toilet, storage throughout and a 33-inch library over the driver area for “all your travel books, poetry or whatever you like to read.”
Since August 2021, the Whitings have lived in the bus full time, rolling past many a nature-filled, scenic sights.
The decision to sell Sandy has been “emotional,” said Holly, but the couple’s ready for a change. Namely, they’re downsizing to a van.
“The big plus of the van is city parking, but I’m honestly looking forward to getting rid of even more stuff,” Joe told The Post of the change.
The couple hopes Sandy’s new owner will use her for plenty more adventures. In the meantime, they’re looking forward to spending less time finding parking on the streets of Chicago when they visit their grandson.
