The subdivision of 8.3 hectares of land to provide for phase 9 of the Whistle Bend subdivision development was approved by city council at its July 25 meeting.

The subdivision of 8.3 hectares of land to provide for phase 9 of the Whistle Bend subdivision development was approved by city council at its July 25 meeting.

Council OKed phase 9 subject to the condition that the Yukon government enter into a development agreement with the city.

The government owns the land and has been the primary developer of Whistle Bend.

The most recent subdivision approval for Whistle Bend was in 2018 for phases seven and eight.

Phase 9 includes 53 single-family lots, 28 duplex lots, eight townhouse lots, nine condo townhouse parcels and one multifamily lot, for a total of 99 lots.

It’s estimated phase 9 will yield between 130 and 170 living units.

In keeping with the theme of naming streets in Whistle Bend after northern steamships, the street names proposed are Alert Avenue, Aurora Drive and Hope Street.

Everywhere else in the world is moving away from single family homes. Not here. Nope! The majority of these lots are single-family, ffs. I guess that thinking, like most everything else in the Yukon, is 20 years behind the times. Why they aren't building UP and strictly multi-family is so short-sighted. In 20 years, we'll be giving out grants to add stories to existing homes because there won't be any land left. You go, Whitehorse!

Mitch - I think municipal government is large enough already and do not want the City to take on the responsibilities of being a landlord. Similarly, beyond social services housing, I don't think territorial government should be investing in rental accommodation either. I think government should get out of the way and, except for health and safety, let landlords run their business as a business.

Didn't see anything or hear anybody who spoke of lots available for mobile/modular homes much like Arkell. That to me this is a glaring omission from the vision of this city. Mobile homes are a great starter home to build equity, why is there nothing in the city's plan to provide such a crucial opportunity?

It's a very good point Anie. With govvies up in housing though, why haven't they built apartments, when they are allowing investors to buy up inventory nationwide?

Mitch - the multi family lot could be an apartment building, but who would build it? A person smart enough to have accumulated enough $ to build an apartment building is not likely to be dumb enough to throw it away on an apartment building. Not in the Yukon.

@ Arturs why would you do that? So there would be an even bigger mess of traffic in Riverdale.

Wilf Carter I don't personally know you but why do you think you are the expert on everything? I read your Letter to the Editor in the paper last week and literally every sentence starts with "I". "I did this, I did that, I worked there, I know everything, I, I, I." I've never seen someone with such a huge ego that spouts nonsense. You need a reality check.

Could a possible partial solution for a traffic egress from Whistlebend be realized by building a bridge below the golf course by Buzz Sampson's old cabin where the river narrows which could connect up with Wickstrom road? I'm not sure who's land this is but perhaps everyone could participate just like the users would.

Any plans on upgrading critical infrastructure... eg. ROADS! Didn't think so..

@ No way jose You sound bitter and xenophobic. I'm sure lots of born and raised Yukoners own houses. At least the ones that want to work and show up for shifts. The ones that collect welfare, smoke weed and never change out of their pajamas all day don't matter anyway.

@ No way jose, That's a pretty narrow separation you have between born here and those new to Canada. Is this more of the 'I was born here so have more rights' club. Are you implying that people who may have lived in YT for many years, and in some cases before you were born, have no right to be living in Whistle Bend?

How many of the place's around whistle bend are owned buy born and raised Yukoners ??? And how many are from fresh off a plane into Canada???

Which one of those fancy Liberal "words" means apartment buildings? People do not fall out of their parent's wombs with a 350k dollar deposit...except Liberal children who live in a delusion amongst our increasingly dismal reality. Build apartment buildings.

This really shows liberals are not in touch with economic development in Yukon. Step one in economic development is proper affordable housing. We have not had an approval of land development since 2018. Liberals need help it take 4 years to develop 2 phrases of a subdivision.
