In late 2021, we covered the emergence of HOKO Design, a UK-based startup that seeks to become “the first household name for residential architecture.”

Part of HOKO’s thesis to become “the homeowner’s architect” is to streamline the client experience of residential design and construction as much as possible. For the company, this means becoming a ‘one stop shop’ for clients, generating VR flythroughs, cost analyses, construction drawings, contract administration, project management, snagging, completion documentation, and catalogs of interior products.

HOKO is not alone in its attempt to build a business model based on client convenience. For this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series, we are shining a spotlight on Brooklyn-based HUTS, who share HOKO’s approach to simplifying the customer experience for residential architecture.

Aimed at prospective clients seeking to build a rural country getaway in the New York state area, HUTS offers a comprehensive service from land acquisition through to project completion.

The company’s “land curation team” maintains a listing of land parcels which the company has appraised as suitable for building on. With a parcel selected, clients choose from HUTS’ series of base designs for rural homes, onto which clients can add custom options. HUTS then offers to manage the scheme’s construction and completion, including access, septic tanks, utilities, solar and geothermal energy, landscaping, and smart technology.

“We know from experience that searching for land, unlocking its many possibilities, developing a budget, navigating the permit and entitlement process, and pulling together all of the pieces in between is daunting,” the studio says. “HUTS offers an approach that can simplify the whole process. Our suite of services is best described as development for a fee, and it’s like having your own in-house expert to handle all the details for you.”

For those interested in experiencing HUTS’ all-encompassing approach first-hand, the studio is currently hiring for four roles on Archinect Jobs: Senior Designer/Project Lead, Designer/Project Coordinator, Architectural Draftsperson, and Studio Customer Success Coordinator.

HUTS is not the first housing innovator to be featured in our Job Highlights series. Back in April, we explored an opportunity at Los Angeles-based Connect Homes, who combine an industrial, modular, customizable approach to homebuilding with a step-by-step process for clients.

Late last year, meanwhile, our editorial team covered the launch of Nabr, a disruptor housing company co-founded by Bjarke Ingels, which also offers a step-by-step, customizable process for potential homebuyers.

Full details on HUTS' latest job opportunities can be found here on Archinect Jobs. Stay tuned for future curated job highlights, and be sure to keep your eyes peeled for more exciting opportunities on Archinect's industry-leading job board. Recent editions of our Job Highlights series have seen career opportunities for an Experiential Graphics Designer at C&G Partners, Computation Design roles at several firms, and a Modular Studio Architect at EVstudio.

What is the fee structure and insurance setup that practices like HOKO and HUTS use?
